Kareri lake is the most sought after destination during weekends in Himachal Pradesh. It is very much closer to Dharamshala and convenient to reach from all the sides. It is located at an altitude of 2930 meters above sea level. The total length of the trek to the lake is 13 kilometers. Though it usually takes 8-9 hours to complete the whole trek in one go. But this is possible only during summers as the night temperatures are mild for trekking. But in winters the temperatures are not tolerable and go to minus degrees as well, making it difficult to stay.
The first half of 5 kilometers of the trek you will reach the midpoint of the trek that is called Rioti. So if you prefer to take a 2 day trek then you can halt at Rioti, which is the midpoint of the whole trek. The halting becomes crucial if you are planning in winters. In the winters the lake is completely frozen and you will witness 5-6 feet of snow covered all around the path towards the lake.
